Beckett Maze
The Samuel Beckett image is based on John Haynes’s 1973 platinum print, Samuel Beckett (452 × 410 mm, image size), presented to the National Portrait Gallery by the photographer in 2018. The plotting algorithm reconstructs the portrait as a maze-like field, using shifts between densely and sparsely drawn passages to produce darker and lighter tonal areas. Its winding structure echoes the recursive, circuitous movement of Beckett’s writing.
